Local Economic Monitor (LEM) – Monitoring Local Economic Conditions across England.
The Local Economic Monitor
Public organisations increasingly need to understand local-level economic trends and drivers. To address this need, OCSI in partnership with GeoWise have developed the Local Economic Monitor (http://www.local-economic-monitor.org) to:
- monitor key economic indicators for all English local authorities, showing the impact of recent trends;
- visualise time series data, including change over recent periods;
- present fully updated datasets, showing the latest available information from a range of government sources.
The report presents statistics on Swindon, which is showing how poorly Swindon has fared in terms of increased unemployment benefit claimant count rate – increasing from 2% in June 2007, to 5.5% in June 2009 (an increase in the rate of 370%). Of the LAs across England, only Corby has increased unemployment rates faster than Swindon (from 2.9 to 6.5%).

Interested in micro-level trends below the level of districts? Please contact us to discuss obtaining a similar interactive report presenting key economic indicators at a more detailed neighbourhood level, updated monthly. How are you reporting the results of the PlaceSurvey 2008?
Headline results from the Place Survey 2008 were published nationally by the Dept of Communities and Local Government (CLG) on 23rd June 2009. Local Authorities have, in many cases, had access to unweighted results for their own area for a longer period of time. National results have, to date, been published as a set of tables largely around the 18 National Indicators supported by the survey for both upper tier and lower tier local authorities in England.
